We review the current knowledge of the spectrum of interactions of reactive chemicals (drugs, metabolites, environmental, occupational, household, or cosmetic ingredients) involved in hypersensitivity reactions including protein haptenation leading to formation of complete antigen, interaction of haptens with other biomolecules and pathways, additional events involving reactive chemicals (besides haptenation) and immediate consequences thereof, and methods to study haptenation and associated events and discuss how individuals may deal with exposure to reactive chemicals or reactive metabolites based on the current understanding of molecular events leading to development of hypersensitivity
