He attended the University of Glasgow and acquired his license to preach in 1823. He was initially a missionary in Scotland and in the Orkney Islands, probably connected to the missionary bands of James and Robert Haldane. Then, in 1828 he sailed to the United States where he became a pastor at the Presbyterian churches in
